International Two-stage Architectural Design Contest of Building for Arvo Pärt Centre

22.01.2014

In collaboration with the Union of Estonian Architects, the Arvo Pärt Centre has announced a two-stage competition for designing a building for the Arvo Pärt Centre in Laulasmaa, near Tallinn. The aim of the competition is to find the best architectural solution for the building, which will house the Arvo Pärt archive at its core.

The competition will be carried out in two stages. The deadline for the first stage is 22 January 2014, when the applications for participating need to be submitted. The second stage will see up to 20 architect teams complete design concepts with technical drawings.

The total prize fund for the two-stage competition is 30,000 euros, and the final results will be announced on 20 June 2014.

“The aim of the first stage of the competition is to select the participants whose previous works are most suitable for the concept and need of the Arvo Pärt Centre,” explains Anu Kivilo, managing director of the centre.

The Arvo Pärt Centre was founded in 2010 by Arvo Pärt and his family with the aim of creating opportunities for preserving and researching the creative heritage of the composer in his native land, Estonia. The centre is situated in Laulasmaa, 35 km from Tallinn, on a peninsula with magnificent natural surroundings within a pine forest near the sea.

The archive of the Arvo Pärt Centre brings together the entire creative legacy of the composer and related information and documents, both in physical and digital form.

The building of the Arvo Pärt Centre will be located in Laulasmaa, on the Lohusalu peninsula. The heart of the centre is the Arvo Pärt archive and the new building can accommodate visitors and researchers. “We plan to extend the centre’s scope – to work together with researchers, include educational programmes, hold conferences, exhibitions, music and film nights and be more open to the public,” says Kivilo.

Total prize fund for the competition is 30,000 euros, which includes 10,000 euros for first place, 8,000 for second and 6,000 for third place. In addition, three honourable mentions will be awarded.
