Kalev Central Stadium 2-stages architectural competition

We invite you to participate in  2-stages architectural competition to find best spatial solution to Kalev Central Stadium.

Completed in 1955 and serving as a multi-purpose stadium as well as being  the venue for the National Folkdance Celebrations, the Kalev Central Stadium, as it is known today, was the first large public sports facility to be built in Tallinn after World War II. With its bowl-shaped site lending the space a certain compactness, it is still among Estonia's most important stadiums, the tall, sloping sides making it an ideal venue for folkdance festivals, for the performers and spectators alike. In recent years, the stadium has only undergone minor repairs.

Now there is an opportunity for a more comprehensive planning of the future of the stadium and its immediate surroundings on a much larger scale. The Kalev Sports Association and the City of Tallinn have signed a contract of good will, aiming to promote Tallinn's leisure and sporting facilities through the development of the Kalev Stadium, transforming the venue into a professional and amateur sports centre.

The objective of the development project is to help reconstruct Kalev Central Stadium as the National Stadium, which is to meet international standards, while comprising a stadium, a training ground, training and club premises as well as facilities for support functions (sports administration, treatment and physiotherapy, accommodation and services). The stadium will continue to host the National Folkdance Celebrations, while also emerging as a public sports centre and the starting point for the „Rahva Rada“ health trail.

With this vision in mind, the preparation of a detailed plan has been initiated and an open architectural design competition will be announced.

The planned development is divided into two main stages:

Stage I, the construction of the stadium and seating areas (for sporting events and dance festivals; target: 2019). This includes the renovation of the stadium and construction of new seating areas. The seating capacity will be increased to 15,000 (eastern and western terraces, levels I and II). This construction stage is planned to receive funding of EUR 14 million exclusive of VAT from the city and state budget;

Stage II (target: 2026) possibility to enlarge seating capacity up to 30 000 seats(temporary or permanent) in case of risen ambition or demand. Requires private capital investments in the construction of approximately 30,000 sq. m of sports and commercial facilities.

Detailed planning main drawing of the site 

Timetable – 1st stage 13.12 – 15.02.2017 and 2nd stage 8.03 – 8.05.2017. Evaluations will take place accordingly, in February (second half of the month) and in May (second half of the month). There will be chosen max 10 participants to take part in second stage. Competition language is Estonian.

 The jury has 7 members, Estonian architects Katrin Koov, Andres Alver and Raine Karp, Finnish architect Samuli Woolston, other members are from Estonian Ministry of Culture, Tallinn City Government and from Estonian Sports Association Kalev (organizer of the competition).
