BAUA Awards 2023 Best Young Architect Diploma Project Prize awarded to Katariina Mustasaar from Estonia

On November 9, 2023, the best works of young architects from Baltic states were awarded at the ceremony held in Lithuania, at the Library of Kaunas Technical University.

This year the jury awarded one diploma project - Katariina Mustasaar, “Post-Industrial Seascape: Phytoremediation of Paljassaare Harbour“. Katariina Mustasaar is a graduate from Estonian Academy of Arts (EE). Tutors: Laura Linsi, Roland Reemaa and Eik Hermann.

Two of the projects received an honorary award:

  • Egle Dimaitytė-Vainermanė (LT) project “Interpretation of Historical Possession in the Forms of Wood Architecture”; 
  • Mark Aleksander Fischer (EE) project “Planning Affordable Housing in Northern Tallinn  Kopli Freight Station – the Last Piece of the Puzzle in the Socio-Economic Landscape of Northern Tallinn”.

The event organized by the Baltic Architects Unions Association (BAUA) aims to highlight the best young professionals’ graduation projects of Baltic architecture education system. This year’s edition features 12 projects from 7 architecture schools – Estonian Academy of Arts (EE); Tallinn University of Technology (EE); Kaunas University of Technology (LT); Vilnius Academy of Arts (LT); Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (LT); Riga Technical University (LV) and The RISEBA University of Applied Sciences (LV). The competition entries are introduced via an online catalogue.

Awards were chosen by an international jury consisting of Dina Suhanova, architect, researcher at Art Academy of Latvia and a board member of the Latvian Association of Architects, architect Kristel Niisuke from Estonia, architect and researcher Matas Šiupšinskas from Lithuania.

Event was organized by Baltic Architects Unions Association (BAUA), in collaboration with Architects Association of Lithuania (AAL), Estonian Association of Architects (EAA) and Latvian Association of Architects (LAA), Young Architects club “Atelpa” and Innovation platform “Morberg’s Studio”.

Event was supported by Culture capital foundation of Latvia, Lithuanian Council for Culture, Cultural Endowment of Estonia, building material company “Knauf”, the lighting design office “Gaismas Stils”, and the manufacturer of skylights and their accessories “Velux”.
