Launch of the competition for ideas for the buildings and outside area of the Maarjamäe complex of the Estonian History Museum

Launch of the competition for ideas for the buildings and outside area of the Maarjamäe complex of the Estonian History Museum

The Estonian History Museum, in cooperation with the Union of Estonian Architects, has announced a competition for ideas, with the goal of finding the best complete solution for the further spatial development of the Maarjamäe complex of the Estonian History Museum.

The competition site is a 34,207 m² plot in Tallinn, at the addresses Pirita Road 56/58/60/62/64/66/68/70/72/72A/74/76. The plot includes the hillside directly adjacent to it and the public area adjacent to Pirita Road.

The aim of the competition is to take a further step towards bringing the vision of the Estonian History Museum to life. Director Sirje Karise said that there are plans to turn the Maarjamäe complex, once it has been spruced up, into a multi-purpose museum environment which will keep alive our cultural heritage and will also offer plenty of interest to visitors. The park has to be suitable for organising open-air events and for presenting open-air exhibitions. A new film museum, a storage facility and a gatehouse will also be built on the territory.

The modern complex of the History Museum will become an inviting place for people to spend their free time, and should give visitors a thorough and diverse overview of Estonian history.

The prize pool for the competition for ideas is EUR 22,349, of which EUR 9580 will be awarded to the overall winner.

Candidates must submit all documentation necessary for qualifying to the Union of Estonian Architects by 2 April, at the latest.

The deadline for submitting competition entries is 4 June 2012.

The competition source material can be downloaded from the home page of the public procurement register (reference number 131392).
