Elering has launched a competition to find a conceptual design for a high voltage power line designed power pylon

21.03.2016

Press Release

Elering has in cooperation with the EAA launched a design competition to find a conceptual design for the erection of one angle tower as a so called designed power pylon on the Harku-Lihula-Sindi 330/110 kilovolt high tension power line.

According to Elering’s chairman of the board Taavi Veskimägi, there are several arguments in favour of building such a designed power pylon. “First and foremost, the designed power pylon must help to blend the highly technological electric power line in with the natural environment, but also to raise the awareness of the people of Estonia of the role of the electric power system in contemporary society,” he noted.

“High voltage lines, cell towers, highway bridges and drainage canals are the very newest stratum of our man-made landscape. And just as our awareness of our physical and social environment increases, so our expectations also increase. For this reason, it is an entirely natural step to consider the spatial and visual effect of infrastructure when large investments are made in that infrastructure. We welcome every initiative of this sort and this design competition is a very good format for this endeavour,” commented Kalle Komissarov, Vice-President of the EAA.

If the design competition for the designed power pylon is a success, Elering will include the erection of the designed power pylon in the Harku-Lihula-Sindi electric power line construction procurement that is to be launched in the latter half of this year. The area of the intersection of the Ääsmäe-Haapsalu and Risti-Virtsu highways in the vicinity of the hamlet of Risti is planned as the location of the designed power pylon.

The Estonian Association of Architects has worked out the competition task and the regulations of the design competition. Three specialists in architecture and two in the field of design will participate in the competition’s five-member jury as proposed by the EAA. The members of the jury are the architects Urmas Muru and Toomas Tammis, the designer Maria Pukk, and two representatives of Elering, Kalle Kilk and Ain Köster.

Among other things, the jury will assess how the designed power pylon relates to the surrounding environment, the attractiveness and functionality of the architectural design, as well as the feasibility and durability of the structural design.

The deadline for submitting competition entries identified by headwords for the designed power pylon design competition is 30 May 2016. The design competition will be held as a straightforward procurement and further information on its conditions is available in the public procurements registry at https://riigihanked.riik.ee/register/hange/172629

The competition documents are partially translated into English, but the competition language is Estonian.
