PRESS RELEASE: Twenty architects are selected to participate in the worldwide architectural competition for new ICC premises

The Hague, 27 May 2008

 

Twenty participants have been selected to take part in an architectural competition for the design of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) new permanent premises. An international jury selected each participant on the basis of the architectural quality of previously completed works and their experience in designing premises with complex programmes. The selected participants come from five different continents and twelve different countries.

Each participant will receive € 35,000 to submit a design sketch based on a specific brief of requirements. The designs must be submitted in August 2008. The three best designs will be announced in November of this year. At that time the twenty designs will be exhibited in the Museon in The Hague, The Netherlands. The three best designs will be awarded a prize. The first prize is € 60,000, the second prize € 50,000 and the third prize € 40,000. The final selection of architect plus the winning design will be announced at the beginning of 2009.

The competition, organised and chaired by the Chief Government Architect of The Netherlands, was launched last February. The Court’s new premises with a total gross floor space of up to 46,000 m2 will be constructed on the present site of the Alexanderkazerne (former military barracks) which is located between the dunes and the Van Alkemadelaan in The Hague. The International Criminal Court and the Netherlands as host country share the vision that the design must guarantee proper working conditions, and a good functionality and safety. The design must be environmentally friendly.
