Peeter Pere elected Chairman of the Union of Estonian Architects

02.03.2010

Press release
The Union of Estonian Architects
02.03.2010

Architect Peeter Pere was elected new Chairman of the Union of Estonian Architects at their regular general meeting on 4th February 2010. A new Chair was also elected for a term of two years. Of the UEA’s 372 members, 167 attended the meeting.

In presenting his views, Peeter Pere said that we are living through complicated times that bring architects face to face with the difficulties in the entire architectural field. The work of architects has dramatically decreased and many are in danger of losing their jobs.

Operating in such circumstances also places additional, complicated responsibilities on the shoulders of the new Chair. The recovery from the crisis will take longer than hoped and will change the entire society. Architects must be able to adapt to change quickly. The necessary conditions must be created for designing, building, safekeeping, and comprehending high-quality spaces.

Peeter Pere was elected by 137 votes in favor; he was the only candidate for chairman.

Peeter Pere graduated from the State Art Institute of Estonia in 1980, and he is an architect and co-owner of the architectural firm, Muru & Pere OÜ. Peeter Pere was a member of the UEA Chair from 1998 to 2002, and again from 2008. He is a member of the UEA’s Qualifications Committee and a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association.

As an architect, he has merited recognition in many competitions, including

Pääsküla Library, 1st place

The Service Building at the Port of Tallinn, Lootsi 13, 1st place (2008)

The Passive Office Building at the Tartu Technology Park, 3rd place (2009)

Prize for the Best Private Residence 2005

Prize for the Best Small Structure 2002-2006, 3rd place

He has designed private residences, office buildings, and his best known works, in collaboration with Urmas Muru, include the social buildings in Lasnamäe, the Haabersti Recreational Centre, the Pääsküla Library, and private residences in Suurupi, Kiili, and Tabasalu in Estonia. He has actively participated in exhibitions, including in the fine arts. He represented Estonia at the Venice Art Biennale in 1999. He also received the Kristjan Raud Prize in 1999. Since 1998, he has served as the Estonian President for the EUROPAN competition for young European architects.

The new UEA management board includes Peeter Pere, Kalle Vellevoog, Tõnu Laigu, Jaak Huimerind, and Villem Tomiste.

The UEA Chair, including members of the management board, includes 21 architects.
